Le Cateau Primary School Minority Ethnic Achievement Hub

Due to the school’s exemplary practice in supporting pupils from ethnic backgrounds, Le Cateau is recognised as a ‘center of excellence’.

The Minority Ethnic Achievement ‘Hub’ is a team of professionals based at Le Cateau who work in partnership with over 60 mainstream schools in Catterick, Richmondshire and the Dales area. Working with schools and families we support pupils with English as an Additional Language and Gypsy, Roma & Traveller backgrounds.

In addition to support for individual pupils and schools, the MEA service offers a comprehensive training programme in best practice to improve provision in schools within North Yorkshire. This also includes training with other agencies, multi-agency strategy group meetings, referrals and supporting referrals to many different agencies such as Speech and Language, EMS or School Psychologists.

We can help by:

* Communicating with parents and pupils to ensure their successful induction when they are newly arrived,

* Assess their level of English and advise staff on how to support the new pupil with a language differentiated curriculum,

* Work with parents and schools to review a child’s previous educational experience and identify any barriers for attendance and engagement,

* Work with the pupil, their family and school to ensure inclusion into mainstream education.

* Support referrals to other agencies.

* Provide a broad range of school based training including working with EAL or GRT pupils and their families, British Values in Educational settings, refugee awareness and Pupil Voice.

A new comprehensive training package will also include.

* A two hour course for TA’s to become more knowledgeable in working with EAL pupils. This course will be based at Le Cateau and will run termly from July

* A Specialist course for Teachers to become EAL Champions in their own school which will begin in the Autumn term and run for three full day sessions over two/three terms.

* The Specialist Teacher is also a (Home Office) facilitator for the one hour WRAP Training for educational settings

Through the support provided by the MEA team, we enable children to settle successfully into school, thereby ensuring that they understand and feel involved in the school curriculum. By providing this support a child or young person will be able to make friends and adapt well to school routines. Through this, pupils will be able to make progress and achieve their full potential.

The Hub is led by Suzanne Wilson, Specialist Teacher and supported by Alison Gilpin ATA/SA and Jenny Long as MEA Administrator.
